Gina I wish you all the best on getting your TR. I am one of those who was cut just like a c-section. So I was some what unhappy with the big scar again, but I did heal fast. Dr.B did my TR. I am on the small side to so it took me half the time as it did with my c-sections to get fully back to normal every day things. That was great. Can not wait to hear how things go your way. Miranda

Gina~
I just read your blog and I am so happy you are going to be able to have TR at CHTRC, you will not regret it! I had Dr.M and he and the entire staff are absolutely wonderful. Read all you can on the site, get the DVD about the surgery, take as much advise as you can get from the women who have already had TR here. I am on day 4 post-op and am feeling fine. A little bit of stinging at incision on occasion, a slight jab of pain once in awhile, but nothing bad enough to need pain meds. Walking about a little, but not too much.

I flew from the west coast, Southern California, to Chapel Hill. TR out here was $8-$14k, plus hospital stay and longer recovery time. Flying to CH cost less and recovery time is shorter. Read the blogs on flying and weather to be best prepared.

Best to you!

Congratulations!! The doctors, nurses and entire staff at Chapel Hill are probably the most amazing people I have ever met. You will never have a second thought about choosing them. My TR was April 20, 2009 and I felt 100% after 10 days. Dh and I have been TTC since 9 days post op and I have never felt healthier in my life. I wish you all the best!

Thank you Kag2324! I think we are going to choose Dr.Berger. I have 3 children but dh has no biological children of his own, so we have decided that we will pull out all the stops!
We have such a long flight to the US but hey it will be worth it to hand dh a baby of his own!Have you had your tr yet?

Ladies!
We've had the best news ever today! Dh has been offered a great job! He hasn't been able to get a job for 7 months and i've been working all the hours to support the family.
We have decided to have the tr down at Chapel Hill! I have been looking at flights and costing the whole thing. Hopefully the currency exchange rate will get a bit better than it is now, but we would rather pay more and have the best do the op, and have a quicker recovery time. I can't sit around for 8 weeks waiting to get better!
I am so happy today! Fingers crossed we can schedule for sometime after September :-)

Dear Gina:

Dr. Berger developed the outpatient technique for tubal ligation reversal. He has performed more than 7000 tubal ligation reversal procedures and has acquired the greatest experience unyting tubes of any doctor worldwide. The techniques Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith use optimize the success of reversing a tubal ligation and reduce the recovery time after the tubal reversal surgery. The majority of women who come to Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center will return to work in 3 - 5 days and are back to the majority of their usual activities in 7 - 10 days. Compare this to the standard approach to reversal surgery where a 2 - 3 day hospitalization is required and recovery can take up to 6 - 8 weeks -- as you were told. This is one of the many reasons women travel from across the country and from around the world for surgery with Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith.

Gina, Sorry for putting my question in the wrong spot. As to your concern. I think it has a lot to to with your physical health prior to your surgery, everybody recovers differently. I would also research where ever you decide to get your TR done, you can never be to informed. I had my TR on March 31, 2009. The day after I was walking around UNC for 45 min (slower than usual!!) returned to work April 2, 2009. Like I said it has a lot to do w/ your physical health. I would highly recommend Chapel Hill if you could swing it, good luck... Kim

Gina - 8 weeks is insane. I didn't need 8 weeks to recover from any of my three c-sections, much less the TR. I was sore for the first few days, but the end of the first week I was getting around fine, doing normal household stuff, driving and feeling fine. In fact - my father was watching my children and had no idea I'd had surgury! We never told anyone, and nobody ever suspected a thing. [Smile] By the end of the second week I was 90% recovered except for heavy lifting or strenous pushing/pulling type stuff. I typically do very well with bouncing back, but this surgury was a breeze as far as the incision and recovery.

CH doesn't cut all the muscles that other places do, and the scar is actually smaller than my c-section. I was walking the hotel lobby that evening after my surgury.

I know it might be difficult, but it may well be worth the money to travel to CH to have this done. You will be fine within three weeks. [Smile]

Best of luck.

Shawna, On the bright side, maybe you just have small hips? [Smile]

I havent had mine yet. I cant imagine 8 weeks. I think it's worth it to make the trip to NC, as Sheila stated. Is it hard to find someone in the UK that will do a TR? I can imagine it is. It's hard to find one where I live and the ones that do do not solely do TR's they also do other infertility treatments. My urologist was at a total dead end in trying to find me a doctor who specialized in TR and he does Vasectomy reversals. So, it's not easy to come by.

Gina,
Most of our women are able to return to their regular activity within 5-10 days after surgery with the exception of lifting anything over 15 pounds for 4 weeks following surgery. The incision is about 2-4 inches right above the pubic bone. We do require our patients to have a BMI of 34.9 or less. We have had many women come to Chapel Hill from the UK and other parts of the world. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to call. Our number is 919-968-4656.
