i took out a loan on my 401k. Interest is really low since you are just paying back yourself. I didnt incur any penalties or anything else and they are just taking a small amount out of each check until its paid back, like 18 months i think.

Great idea Tina about the website...especially if any family member is wondering what to give you as a bday or gift otherwise, they can just make a donation. I've heard of people doing this for believe it or not, breast implants (my bff put up a website for that) and believe it or not raised almost $4000 from complete strangers. It's amazing what 400 people donating $10 can do and that might sound like a lot of people but on the web it's not and voila you've got $4000.

Good Luck...I will say a prayer for you and your family. Kudos for the ingenuity

I donated eggs years and years ago, 10 I think? Anyhow....it paid 2500 I think? Again, I wasn't doing it for money way back then....I just wanted to help someone and had no idea that years later I'd yearn for another child myself and be in this situation.

I think I got paid maybe 2 weeks or even a month after egg retrieval? It wasn't the day of though...pretty sure about that.

And you have to go through psychological testing, all the meds/shots that a regular IVF patient does. The only difference of course is that they are not placed back in you...but still it's a lot of appointments to check follicle growth, a lot of shots...etc.

justinheather- I also have thought about egg donation and my husband does not like the idea either. But I think it's a great idea. It helps out a couple wanting a baby just a badly if not more than us plus the compensation would pay for most of the TR. Where did you inquire to that pays the day of retreival? All the ones I have looked at do not compensate until you are chosen as a donor. If you talk your husband into seeing it your way pl let me know how you did it..lol

justinheather - I think it's wonderful that woman are comfortable doing egg donation. Many infertile couples are blessed with the donation of an egg or even frozen embies that other couples chose not to destroy or keep frozen. What a blessing it will be to a couple that is unable to have a child due to "egg issues".

There are concerns and worries about it I'm sure, but I think egg donation is a very giving act if your able to do so. Try and find a site or network of ladies that have done the donation so you can listen and get feedback about concerns/issues you may have.

Good luck to you!

Thank You, to everyone who replied to my post. I'm really considering doing egg donation. As a woman wanting more children, I relate to those unable to start their own families. My husband isn't keen on the idea, I don't think I would agree to him doing the sperm donor thing. We just got the paper work on becoming an egg donor, I know the program I would be going through pays $5,000 and it pays the day of the egg retrieval. Again, not sure if its for us. Again thanks for all the ideas and replys.

My husband re-enlisted during his last deployment to Iraq.. He received a ten thousand dollar bonus which was tax free because he was over there. That was a real blessing and pretty much sealed the deal for us. I used rewards points from our bank for our trip and rental car. If we would not have gotten that bonus, we would have cashed savings bonds, as we have been buying those for years now. We did apply and got approved for MEDCHOICE, but chose not to go with them, because the origination fees were so high, even with our good credit. By the way, since we itemize our taxes, we were able to use every expense related to the surgery as a deduction, so that was nice.

Dear Heather,
A lot of patients do use their tax refund checks, but if this is not an option for you, please consider our pre-payment plan. You can open an account with $250 which would go toward your overall fee and you would be locked into the current rates. I hope this helps. Let us know if you have questions we could answer.

Best wishes,
Lisa, Surgical Tech.

I saved for some of the surgery then decided to put the rest on one of my low interest credit card. I paid for my bloodwork (close to $200.00 )and air fare out of my savings for the surgery. I also used some sky miles to help with the cost of our plane tickets. When I get next years tax return I will be using that to pay toward the credit card that I charged the surgery on. I really had hoped to pay more of it in cash but the same thing happened as most people, something always comes up. I decided that I've suffered long enough with PTLS so this was something that I HAD to do. I'm treating it as any other bill.
Some of the ways I saved(and continue to do so ) is I only pay for things in dollar bills and all the change I get back I throw in my piggy bank and roll it at the end of the month. I've been averaging around $40.00 in rolled change a month. All that goes into the bank and I pay it toward my surgery. Also I've used a credit card to help me earn sky miles to pay for part of my air fare.I had an offer from one that if I joined that I would get 25,000 sky miles after my first purchase. I made a small purchase, collected the skymiles then cashed them in to help with the cost of the airfare. Then the credit card that I put the rest of my surgery on, they sent me cash advance checks that would allow me to write a check to myself for cash at 2.99% APR for the entire term of my loan. So I did that, deposited it into my checking account and did a wire transfer to CH. If your getting your surgery done by Dr. Berger that will save you an additional $100.00 off of the surgery price. Dr. Monieth doesn't give any additional discounts so if your using him you wouldn't have to worry about doing that. In the end my bank charged me a $25.00 fee to do the wire transfer so I ended up with a $75.00 savings. Still worth it. Then I have a cash back credit card that I booked my stay at the Sheraton on. I get 5% cash back on my stay there. Not alot but it all adds up. Just be careful with credit cards and know how to use them to get the deals. I paid off the skymiles card and cancelled it already. It had a $100.00 annual fee but the first year was free so that's why I cancelled it. Ask for details in writing when signing up for any of these deals ( if you decide to go that route ) and save the papers stating what the terms are. This could save your butt in the end. Also, I only use my cash back card for purchases that I can pay off that month and don't carry a balance on. The only card I will actually carry a balance on is the one I put my surgery on. I do have excellent credit though so that's how I get alot of these deals.
Also we've been making more meals at home and barely go out for dinner unless we have a coupon or it's a special occassion. I also do childcare from my home and have taken some drop in kids this summer to add to my income. It's not steady but $20.00 here and there really does help out. Hope some of these ideas might help you in funding your TR. You can also go to some fundraising websites and get some great ideas. Good Luck!

We used our tax refund too. It covered all of our surgery and travel costs.

We were able to use our tax refund. I wanted to do it a year earlier and it didn't work out but it did this past year for us!

I did the same thing, every time we would save some money we would have to use it. So about a year ago we started the prepayment plan and that helped, because the money was not at our bank. I had my TR 5/08/09.
