It is recommended to take Iron 325mg twice a day. This would mean increasing your dose. Once your blood levels are up, you should feel a lot more energy.

Thank you all for the information. I am considering the injections and have been researching iron rich foods. I am currently on 150mg of Iron twice a day. I feel so tired all of the time that it is really depressing, I try to fight it but end up dozing off and just feeling worn down. I am determined to fight this and get my counts up so that I am able to have my TR on the 14th of August. Wishing all of you wonderful ladies the best!

Wow...I bet you feel so worn down with and H&H that low! yikes! I run low during pg's and left the hospital both times with an H&H of 6.9 and 21, but they knew it would come up...I just took the iron pills. It took a few weeks though. Walking around that low for a long time can make you feel horrible...I hope you get it fixed soon! And, be careful...if you get chest pain or breathlessness...go to the ER. God bless you!

Wow ColleenMommyof4, I just remembered getting iron injections when I pregnant with my second son in 1990 because of a low iron. My doctor believes that my periods may be too heavy and that may be the main reason for the anemia. They suggested a Hysterectomy, but since I want to have another child, that kills that idea.
I am going to really delve into a frenzy of eating iron rich foods and also implement taking vitamin C along with my iron supplements.
I tackled so many obstacles to get me so close to having my TR that I do not want this to prevent me from having the procedure and also the chance of having a baby with the love of my life.

omg 6.9 and they havent given u blood? my hgb was 5.7 after i gave birth to my son and i had to have a transfusion....have you had a full anemia workup done? last time i had the whole workup done they found out my b12 & ferritin were low but my tibc & hgb and rbc were within normal limits....you really need to find out what is causing this cause its dangerous to be that low and its even more dangerous for you to get pregnant with levels that low....my son was born at 37 weeks and was in respiratory distress...they feel that it was due to my anemia when pregnant saying he didnt get enough oxygen in utero...good luck hon

nycmom2be, Have you seen your PCP and had other test done to diagnose why you are anemic? There are many forms of anemia, each with its own cause. Anemia can be temporary or long term, and it can range from mild to severe. You may be able to prevent some types of anemia by eating a healthy, varied diet. Additional testing to determine the underlying cause of your anemia might be helpful. Martha

Have your doctors mentioned maybe an iron shot? It gets into your system quicker and your body does not have to break it down and try to get as much out of it as it can. Colleen is totally right about the vitamin C. If you get too much dairy or too much tea it can keep your body from absorbing the iron it needs. My son was always anemic and the doctor told me to cut back on the tea and the milk. It works great. There is something in the tea leaves I think. I have also taken what is called "slow FE" which is iron and you can get it at the pharmacy OTC. It releases slowly into your system so that your body can absorb it as it is released and not get a mega dose and only absorb about a .25 of it. I would say iron, water, vitamin C, and lots of green vegetable. Good luck. Heather

Thank you both for your replies. I was prescribed procrit by the ER physician however, it is being tied up by insurance red tape. My hemoglobin is 6.9 currently. I am looking on-line for a listing of iron rich foods and will be incorporating that into my diet along with my prescribed dosage of iron supplements.
I am going to re-test at the end of June and again on July 22, I hope and pray that my levels will be higher so that I am able to have my TR.

when you take your iron supplements dont take it with any type of dairy product.....take it with vitamin C as this enhances the iron absorption into your system this goes with eating food high in iron also....so i know a diet that eliminates alot of dairy and is rich in meats, green leafy veggies and vitamin C you will see an increase in your RBC & HGB....how is your hemoglobin by the way?
i know at work we give procrit & aranesp to help increase RBCs but idk if your doc is willing to go the medication route....they are subcutaneous injection medications...but these are mainly given in chemotherapy or chronic renal failure patients in my experience....i do know from reading my handy dandy PDA that they do give procrit presurgery to help increase the RBCs because of blood loss but idk if they would be willing to give it to you for an elective procedure....
i hope the diet works for you and you are able to go to chapel hill!!! good luck and keep us updated!!

I'm 45 and just had my TR. I say go for it. As for the iron issue. You should really try to continue to eat as many iron rich foods as you can, along with iron supplements.

I read the boards daily and try to comment when time allows. The one thing I admire and notice here is the strong sense of support for each other. While I am very new here, I was hoping that today I could receive a bit of support as my situation finally hit me and I am now in a state of worry.
I scheduled my TR in January for this August. I had not planned on ever really having more children until I met this incredible man that I am dating and hope to marry soon. He has never been married and does not have any children. I am divorced with 4 children, with ages from 16 to 20. I decided to have the reversal because I want to start a family with him and finally have the happy family life that I was too young to have with my prior husband.
Well I took my blood-work on June 1 and everything cleared but my CBC. My blood count is at 25 and should be at a range of 35-47. I have been taking iron supplements for a while as this severe anemia has caused me to hospitalized a few weeks ago.
I am now unable to have my reversal, unless my CBC rises to 30. However, once I have the reversal and finally obtain a BFP, my blood count needs to stay up in order to maintain a healthy pregnancy and delivery. I should also mention that I will be 40 in 3 weeks and my age is also a concern as far as having a baby within the next year or so.
I am worried because I've tried iron supplements and still no luck on having a higher blood count to date. I am going to retest as I am hoping there is still time before my cut-off before the August date to get my blood count increased.
I am going to attempt to eat liver and have been eating other iron rich foods, are there any suggestions for raising your blood count in a short period of time?
I wish all of you the best in your quest here toward starting a new family.
