Ewww, that grosses me out about now washing your hands. Blech!
Andrea, We were lucky in that our pedi is DAN! so shes awesome in supporting our non-vaxing choice. What are you guys doing for preventatives? Shes got us all doing probiotics, D3, Bieler's Broth, and we're trying to stay hydrated. In case we DO get the flu, we're planning on Oscillococcinum in leiu of tamiflu. Praying that we all stay flu free though!

I went to a restaurant the other day that didnt have soap in the ladies bathroom, so I walked into the men's bathroom and got some. lol I was just shocked that they didnt have any in there.
When I worked, we would keep an eye out for the people we knew were walking out of the restroom that didnt wash their hands.

Andrea - Ditto the people and bathrooms. It's digusting that so many find it unnecessary to wash hands after using a restroom. I've been to stores that don't even have working handwash. One reason why I carry antibacterial hand sanitizer in my diaper bag and purse.
I hope everyone avoids this nasty flu bug and gets through the season as well and healthy as possible! My son is sick with flu-like symptoms right now...I'm hoping the chicken soup, rest and fluids will do the trick.
I know! That's got to be frightening. Couple that with how it appears that many adults leave a restroom without washing their hands, or cough and sneeze without covering, and it's enough to make me a recluse! Best wishes staying healthy and on your TR!
Georgiamom,
It sounds like you are working hard to make informed decisions. That's great. I pray you stay very well during your pregnancy!

I wouldn't care much about this flu if I didn't have my reversal procedure scheduled 6 days from now. Any other time, I would just take my regular routine of vitamins, handwashing, and staying away from sick people. I was just saying how suddenly any sickness - even the plain old cold - is making me now want to leave the house! After my TR - bring it on germs! LOL!!

I got my vaccine today at my OB's office. DH and I did lots of research, talked to my OB and our family doctor and we couldn't find anyone with the medical knowledge to tell us why I shouldn't get it. I get the seasonal flu shot every year because of the traveling I do and the number of schools that I visit each year and have never had a problem. If anything, the complications from getting the flu while pg worried me more than the effects of the vaccine. Believe me, we take every precaution possible around here. We have more clorox wipes, cans of lysol, and hand sanitizer than a hospital. Everyone that comes into our house must do there hands before they come in the front door, the boys use it before getting in the car after practice, etc. My DH has an OCD thing with germs during normal times, so this has him in disinfecting overdrive, poor guy. I chose to get the vaccination on top of all of that just for an added layer of protection, not just for me, but for the baby, my 1 year old, and one of my sons who was hospitalized once for double pneumonia. With as much as I interact with the public I would hate to bring something home to them.

ITA Lucefamily.... it's basically another strain of the flu. Good luck proving that flu shots prevent the exact type of flu strain that hits you anyway.
It sort of comes down to a world view for some people. If I believe that the WAY the cells are derived is wrong-and this goes for nearly all vaccines, I can't in good conscience be part of it.
If I don't trust the gov't to fully acknowledge that the formaldehyde, mercury, aluminum, and other toxic substances can cause injury, then I don't trust them to inject my tiny baby or pregnant body with it. A little research into the swine flu vaccine debaucle of the 70's is very helpful..there are still people living with that.
If we lead a healthy lifestyle, we should be able to fight off the flu, if we don't, we have considerations to make. It's a non-issue for us, as our kids are all at home each day, and we are "whacko supplement users". None of us have been more than a sniffle sick in ages. If we get the flu, we'll fight it off.
The media reports what it chooses to report to have the people in this country right where they want them-in compliance, plain and simple.
Interestingly, when asked, most WHO and government employees state that they and their children and wives will NOT receive the H1N1 vaccine.
Anyway, we are a non-vaccinating family. Until someone can guarantee that the vaccines are proven to WORK, don't come from aborted babies, and the vaccines are safe, and will not cause injury; and they will stake their medical license on that fact-we're out.
It is a personal choice, and I respect whatever choice others make. I just think it's scary that many are choosing to get the shot based on hype the media throws at us, rather than fact.

I think it's totally personal decision to vaccinate. DH and his ex had decided they WOULD vaccinate his kids. While my ex and I decided we would NOT vaccinate mine. I supported whatever my husband wanted to do. He respected my decision not to vaccinate. However, they all got sick before we could get the vaccination. His son got sick just the day before he was supposed to get vaccinated. I am glad they got the swin flu and it's done and over with in our household. It wasnt near as bad as we had anticipated. I know that my DD has had a more severe flu a few years back which was a seasonal flu. Not downplaying that others have had a bad experience. I am just glad it wasnt near as bad in our household.

Luce - I totally agree with you. We had a swine flu outbreak during the Ford presidency as well, so this isn't the first time we've had this particular strain.
I think people are being scared to death. I'm not saying it can't be serious or that those at risk (pregnant, young children, elderly or those with compromised immunity) can't be seriously ill, but for most healthy people it will be a nasty flu, and you will need to treat it that way and you will recover.
I hate that the media is scaring us all to death like this. My grandmother is a wreck and hermitting in her house afraid to even go out for groceries...

Too much media hype if you ask me...According to the World Health Organization, fewer than 5,000 people have died around the globe from this variant of swine flu. In any normal year, influenza causes between 250,000 and 500,000 deaths worldwide.
We will NOT be getting the vaccine in our home for the following reasons:
1) The FDA has NOT even said the vaccine is safe (or effective for that matter) for pregnant women or children:
"Safety and effectiveness of Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine have not been established in pregnant women, nursing mothers or in persons less than 18 years of age."
2) We are prolife. The vaccine was cultured using human fetal cells(originating from human aborted fetal cell line PER-C6, God forbid they say "baby") Heres a brief excerpt from the physican who performed the abortion:
“So I isolated retina from a fetus, from a healthy fetus as far as could be seen, of 18 weeks old. There was nothing special with a family history or the pregnancy was completely normal up to the 18 weeks, and it turned out to be a socially indicated abortus - abortus provocatus, and that was simply because the woman wanted to get rid of the fetus. The mother was completely normal... PER C6 was made just for pharmaceutical manufacturing of adenovirus vectors-and the pharmaceutical industry standard. I realize that this sounds a bit commercial, but PER C6 were made for that particular purpose. Also, as far as I know, more than 50 companies have taken license for PER C6.”
I cant begin to imagine the suffering this child endured. We've all been pregnant and know that our children were very much alive and able of feeling at this point.
3) The preservatives are outragous, to name a few: Formaldehyde- In the body, formaldehyde can cause proteins to irreversibly bind to DNA. Laboratory animals exposed to doses of inhaled formaldehyde over their lifetimes have developed more cancers of the nose and throat than are usual, as have workers in particle-board sawmills… Formaldehyde is classifed as a probable human carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and as a known human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
Sodium Deoxycholate- a water soluble ionic detergent/bile salt which causes cell death and symptoms such as burning, redness, and swelling. It has been shown to weaken the blood-brain-barrier (BBB) and subsequently activate seizures.
Thimerosal- has powerful and damaging effects on cells of the nervous and immune systems in mammals including humans. Its effect may vary depending on the dose, the genetics of the individual, and the timing of exposure. The mercury dose from thimerosal produces acute and often deadly ethylmercury blood levels.
Squalene in AS03 adjuvant- Too dangerous for human use, Squalene is not officially licensed for use in the United States or Canada. Oil adjuvants like squalene have been ordinarily used to inflict diseases in animals – for experimentation and study. According to anthrax vaccine expert Gary Matsumoto and other reliable sources, the US military used an unlicensed, experimental anthrax vaccination laced with squalene, with disastrous consequences, including Gulf War Sydrome.
Polysorbate 80- been found to negatively affect the immune system and cause severe anaphylactic shock which can kill. In addition to this, there have been studies in Food and Chemical Toxicology which showed that Polysorbate 80 causes infertility. Baby female rats were injected with polysorbate 80 at days 4-7 after birth. It accelerated the maturing of the rats and caused changes to the vagina and womb lining, hormonal changes, ovary deformities and degenerative follicles.

DD, DH, and DSS, all had it. And possibly my son. Somehow I missed getting it which is odd because I catch everything. Either that or what I got was minor cause i had a few days there where I wasnt feel well. I bleached, lysoled, germ x'd, hand washed, and the entire nine yards. The whole family was tired of me fumigating the house. My hands are so dry from all the handwashing and germ x. My kids can tell you I have driven them insane with "dont touch that" or "go wash your hands". And they still got it. But to be honest, I have seen my kids way more sick before and the H1N1 didnt throw them for a huge loop. We had a few sleepless nights. DD got tamiflu which I swear helped, but DSS didnt get it because they were sold out of the liquid everywhere. He still fared well. It came on fast and strong that is for sure. My husband has also been more sick than he was. So, with that being said. It ended up not being as bad as we thought? We quarantined them, except one got sick while we were camping (not fun in a tent!), the other kids we had stay at the other parents house and kept them out of school until the doctor said it was ok to take them back. But still, it isnt fun. And especially if you are having your surgery and worried. The mask thing is not out of the question!!!!

I want to recommend the H1N1 vaccine to everyone trying to become pregnant. Contracting the Swine flu virus during pregnancy can be dangerous to both mother and baby, and the vaccine will protect you. Contact your local health department for information about getting an immunization. Pregnant women in any trimester, or women who may become pregnant during the influenza season, are considered a high priority to receive the H1N1 vaccine.

I'm with Anita. I'm a big germophobe here too..I use antibacterial after diaper changes, cleaning products, cooking, cleaning...heck I use it all day even after washing my hands.
The swine flu is serious, but bottom line - it's a strain of flu. If the symptoms get serious - head to the doctor, ER or urgent care. Tamiflu will help relieve your symptoms. Keep your child at home, hydrated and resting and typically within 7-10 days they will begin to recover. ITA with motherbug - if people would stay home until they are without symptoms and fever-free for at least 24 hours this wouldn't spread as quickly as it has. Too many people shove their kids back into school and it becomes a darn epidemic..GRRRR.
I'm also a big believer in plenty of fruits and veggie, lots of rest and healthy living helps us keep well and recover quicker when we are sick.

I have been more than usual washing my hands and taking precautions. Thank goodness I am a clean freak anyway, so It isnt a far stretch for us to germ x all the time. But, I think it is sad that people do not have the common sense to stay home or keep kids home if they are symptomatic. Grrrrr!!! I am hunkering down and staying home until next week! for real!
