My Dh is not quite 30 and had a receding hairline - not bald yet. But he is adorable and I love him to death. Most people would think he is older just because the way he acts. He calls my almost 19 year old "son" even though he was in 5th grade when he was born! LOL He is very old fashioned and his parents are older than mine. He was a "late in life" baby - now he wants one of his own.

At the time I was told an FSH of 2 was awesome. Most docs never say the level can be TOO low. But after much research I found that a number lower than normal may also mean that I am having issues with producing enough FSH - hence the reason I don't mature my eggs in time for ovulation. Again, it is suspected that this is due to my higher insulin level. I am praying that having been on metformin for the last 7 weeks my hormones are getting back to where they should be. At least I know everything else is working right - just need a "good egg"!

Wow, what a great and informative post CarolJean. Thank you for taking the time to do it. I will keep these things in mind as I get things lined up to get this done. I do have a question though. You said your FSH was 2. What is considered normal, or in an acceptable range?

DOnCA I feel like I know you LOL. We have that Sanford and Son thing going on at our house too. Good thing we have 5 acres! As far as DH goes we look about the same age because I look younger and he looks older because he is mostly bald.

Hi ladies. I'm 42 and will be 43 in July. I had my TR 4/14/08 so I am just over a year of TTC. My DH is 29 and will finally be turning 30 in a few weeks. I'm embarrased to tell people my husband and my oldest son (22 in a few weeks) are both in their 20's. I have four sons in all (13, almost 16, almost 19, almost 22). No grandchildren, thankfully - not quite ready for that - and they are even less ready than I am! My FSH was 2, both tubes open and ready for business, and I have clockwork ovulation and AF. However, I recently found out I am insulin resistant which is inhibiting my hormones from doing what they are supposed to do - mature my follicles so I can ovulate a "good" egg. So, that being said, an additional test you may want to have done (if you are overweight or have a family history of diabetes) is an insulin b/w test. Its just a shame that I have wasted a years worth of TTC and meds only to find out that this is most likely what has been causing my fertility issues. I have been on metformin for about 7 weeks and hopefully it will start to increase my chances of getting pregnant soon.

Denise - I was always a "fertile myrtle" as well. That is why my ex-husband made me get TL 13 years ago - I could get pregnant at the drop of a hat! Only one of our four were planned. I assumed I would have had a baby by now - but this is the case with a lot of ladies on here - very fertile before TL, but struggle after TR. Its not that it won't happen - just may take alittle more effort and getting to know your body again. But being over 40 means that after 3-6 months of trying you can enlist the help of RE's and meds - sooner than a younger woman! As for the things you asked about:

1. Robitussin 2tsp 3x daily - this can be any brand of cough expectorant that has the primary ingredient of guafinesin - but no other suppressants or antihistamines. This is to help thin out your cervical mucus - which is really only necessary if A) you are on clomid which can thicken your CM -or- B) if you don't usually have EWCM or watery fertile CM during ovulation - this can become a problem esp. as we get older.

2. Vitamin B6 500mg daily - actually a B complex is good as it will contain extra folic acid, but the B vitamins, esp B6 are supposed to improve ovulation and implantation. This should be only in addition to a pre-natal vitamin which is important to take as well. Folic acid is very important to prevent birth defects such as spina bifida - the occurence of which also becomes more prevelant as we get older.

3. Ovulation tests - or OPKs as we call them on here - you may even want to use a few BEFORE your TR. Even though you have had a TL, you should still be producing hormones that are causing ovulation, just the tubes are not open to allow them to fertilize. The OPKs detect LH in your urine which occurs 12-36 hours before ovulation. Its good to know even before TR IF and WHEN you are getting your LH surges because it will let you know if you are ovulating regularly and when your most fertile time of the month is - which should be 12-14 day BEFORE your AF.

4. Pre-Seed - or another brand available at stores is Pre-conceive - this is a personal lubricant that, unlike KY or others, does NOT harm sperm count or motility. Its designed to supplement your CM to help the sperm stay alive and create a fertile environment for sperm and egg to meet. Again, if you alread have EWCM, or fertile CM, you probably don't need this - but it won't hurt.

Other things not mentioned that are good:

5. Baby aspirin daily - this has been shown to help thicken the uterine lining - which is good for implantation of the fertilized egg. And, it helps to prevent some forms of miscarriage caused by clotting of the blood flow to the embryo. Most doctors recommend daily aspirin these days anyway, unless you have a problem with NOT clotting or thinning of the blood.

6. EPO (evening primrose oil) - also another element to help improve CM. It can usually take a few months to be beneficial, so you can start taking before TR. It is a natural supplement that improves estrogen levels which in turn improves CM - but should ONLY be take from AF to ovulation - do not take after ovulation has occured. Then start again when AF arrives.

7. Progesterone cream - some women disagree, others don't think its worthwhile, but so far no research has proven it is a bad thing. Progesterone cream (about $12 at Walmart) is a lotion that many women have used for years after menopause to help improve their progesterone levels, as "estrogen dominance" can become a problem after menopause. However, some women can have lower progesterone levels than normal after ovulation and will use the cream only from ovulation until AF is due and quit using if a pregnancy test is negative. This is to improve prog level after ovulation when it should be higher to promote a pregnancy.

8. BBTs - I swear by BBTs at least for a few months to help determine how your cycle is working. You can buy a special thermometer (less than $10) which determines temps to the hundreth rather than the tenth like a reg thermometer. You can follow the instructions that come with it - but you just need to take your temp first thing in the am before getting up to pee or drink water and you will get a consistent chart of how your temperature fluctuates with your hormone levels during your cycle. This is helpful in determining ovulation, temp shift after ovulation and the length of your luteal phase.

I hope this information helps - sorry about the book! LOL

FertileMyrtle~ That is so strange...my husband just sold two vehicles to pay for my surgery! My husband is a car guy. He is thinning out the fleet, so to speak. We have a 64 Corvair Rampside and 64/65 Pontiac Grand Prix leaving this week, and an 83 Mercedes that left today. Thank GOD!!! Our "Sanford & Son" landscape is leaving. LOL [Big Grin]

I don't look too shabby for my age either. I don't look like a model or a spring chick, but my skin looks great and I have only a few greys. On the other hand, my hubby has more grey than I and is startign to recede. His save is that he has decent skin and his hair is about 4-5 inches past his shoulders. His greys and tummy are his only age enemies. LOL.

Where there is a will, there is always a way. You will make it! Hang in there!

In the meantime take good care of yourself. Prepare your body for the future. Don't get your hopes up too high, but let hope carry you through. We never know what the future holds for us.

Peace. [Smile]

I always feel so lonely but it is nice to know I am not alone. People can't believe our age difference when we tell them. I look younger and because he is mostly bald, he looks older.

I got my dvd yesterday and it was very interesting. I was going to have DH watch it but they showed the whole operation and he doesn't like watching stuff like that.

I am hoping we can sell his other truck. A freightliner. He plans on asking about $8000 for it. He got laid off the week before the wedding and it took him a month to find another lease. He has only been back to hauling for a week. We have gotten behind on a few bills since then and he wants to use it for that. I am going to tell him if we can use that for this operation then I will sell my bike and travel trailer to go for bills.

Dearest ~ FERTILEMYRTLE45 ~ I am new in here also. My husband is 35 and we have been married for 10 years (I am 45 also). We have an 8 yr old son and the OB/GYN told me that my body couldn't have anymore children, so he tied me up. We regret this decision so intensely. So here I am, scheduled for TR on May 13. I am excited and trying to stay totally positive about this whole experience. I had a Day 3 FSH that was a 4, my cycles are round the clock regular (except last month was really weird, turned into 9 days and got that checked out).

Hopefully I will have EXCELLENT news REAL soon!

I will give God all the praise and glory due His name...NO MATTER WHAT! (If anything, at least my body will be put back together again).

Blessings to you all!
Denise

PS...did you ever stop to think about Elisabeth and how she was "advanced in age" when she conceived John the Baptist? Think about it. Back then, a girl married when she "became a woman" or started to menstruate. So how old is "advanced years". If Elisabeth bore in her advanced age, it is possible for us too. According to His will, may it be done unto me. Amen.

ddgirl ~ Hello. My name is Denise also, I am 45, I have 5 children (twins age 28; son, age 15; daughter, was a twin, age 11; and a son age 8), schedule for TR 5/13/09.

Where did you get the info to use these items and what is each supposed to do?
1. Robitussin 2tsp 3x daily
2. Vitamin B6 500mg daily
3. Ovulation tests
4. Pre-Seed

I have been reading a lot and there seems to be a lot of negative toward the ability to conceive after 40, yet there is also much encouragement in the boards.

My mother has always called me "Fertile Myrtle", so I am hoping to be able to live up to that name, even at 45.

I had a Day 3 FSH done two cycles ago and my level was a 4, so that gave me some hope. But then my next cycle was really weird. I am normal, like clockwork, and it ended up being 9 days as opposed to 5, lots of clotting. OB/GYN did an endometrial biopsy and he told me that I do not ovulate. (Same Dr. that told me I needed to have the L in the first place).

My husband and I so dearly desire just one more, more if possible, but at least one more. Only my last child is his, by blood. He adopted my youngest children, so they are technically his also. We had both been desiring another child for about a year, but never said anything to one another. Then it just came out one day and we started to look into TLR. I just hope that our 2 years of research haven't ruined our chances.

God bless,
Denise O

Hello everyone. I'm new here but will probably be a regular on this thread. A little background.

I will be 45 in a month. I have been with my wonderful hubby (who is 34) for almost 7 years. We finally got married April 4. He has always talked about wanting another child. He has a daughter from his previous marriage. He didn't figure on having any since he knew I had TL 6 months before I met him. But since we set the wedding date, I have been looking into options.

Initially when I had my TL, I wasn't expecting to ever find someone as wonderful as he is. After all, he married me thinking I couldn't give him the one thing he really wanted. And he treats his daughter wonderfully and does well with my son. He always loves when my grandson comes over and stays.

I didn't realize that TR was even an option until recently. I knew vasectomies could be reversed but never put any thought about it being possible for me.

I feel like I am rambling. Hopefully I will be able to schedule my TR soon.

Hi Betty.

The weather is beautiful here in VA too. I'll be in the garden as well...have some hydrangeas to plant and zinnia seeds to sow. I love gardening!

I hope you have great success this time. Keep us posted.

Good Morning Ladies,

It's gorgeous here in NC -- looking at mid 80's all weekend and for me that is always wonderful!! Have plans to spend time in the flower garden - it's wonderful therapy for me. Who knew a flat of marigolds for $10 could help me unwind and relax..lol

Hope everyone is doing well. We've been quiet for a while - hope that just means everyone is well and happy and just really busy with family and life in general.

Well we are off to IVF round #2 - We went back to RE yesterday and did the baseline U/S - we start stims again in a few days and go back on 05/04/09 to make sure that my body is listening to the meds and doing what it should.

I saw my OB/GYN yesterday for my annual and he is such a wonderful doctor - I've yet to hear anyone say anything negative about this guy - he not only is very knowledgable in his field but he treats you each time as an old friend - he hasn't seen in a while. We were laughing about how we used to think back in our teens that sitting in a Chevrolet with a boy and kissing would make us pregnant - lol

I told him I thought I knew my body better now than I ever had in my life - Since my TR - I do know that when AF arrives - she is NOT the witch she used to be and the mood swings that I had prior to TR are gone - which means a world of difference to the people who are with me on a daily basis --

Just wanted to check in and say hello - Miss seeing everyone post - Be good to yourself and do something special for yourself - just because!!

Back to the garden for me - who knows - enough of this flower planting and I could be sane again soon....... [Big Grin]

Take care!
Betty

Sparky,

Wishing you tons of luck on your next try! Sending good vibes your way!

Emmie - absolutely - email me anytime - It's my name BLTEN123 at gmail - Hope you are doing ok!

Anita - thanks for your words of encouragement - I started the b/c pills Monday night and my next appt with RE is the 23rd - she's changed my meds and giving me menofur this time - so hopefully that will make a difference with me and we will be able to catch a few good eggs before they get out of the gate. DF says that he is sure we will have 11 and 4 will fertilize - I'm mentioned to him that we've not be really lucky when it comes to lottery numbers..lol

Had a really rough start to my week this week - I think it was from getting the BFP on Fri and not really letting it sink in until Monday -- Jordan was home from college which was a wonderful thing because it kept my mind off of things and we have a weekend full of fun! Just think on Monday - it sorta hit me full force - so I had a pity day for myself - went to accupuncture yesterday - picked myself up - dusted off the tears and ready to go back head first to get the dang BFP that keeps running away..

Hope you ladies are all doing well! Weather is finally gorgeous here in NC supposed to be mid 70's all weekend - so if you come looking for me - I'll be in the flower beds - wonderful therapy for me!

Take care ladies and do something special for yourself!

Betty

Sparky, I am glad you have a good attitude about this, looking at it as one door closed and another open! Hopefully you will get your sticky BFP soon!
