Yes, we are hoping there will soon be a baby in there ! But seriously, "yes" is another way of saying we have consent for surgery and indicating the correct location.

I got the biggest kick out of this! It makes good sense, though I have never seen it in my homestate. I like the idea that it means "yes to a baby", though.

Heather--This is a safety measure to insure that the surgery you are having done is on the right body part. The patient marks the "yes" to indicate that they agree that this is where they understand their surgery is. This is more critical in a general hospital where they are doing surgery on limbs or other body parts where there is right sided or left sided surgery. At CHTRC, the "yes" will always be over the lower abdomen or navel (if a laparoscopy is done). Sally,RN

It is legally required. It is to acknowledge that you agree that you are having a specific surgery on your abdomen. It lets the surgen know he is working on the correct body part and it is the correct procedure. It may seem silly since you only have one abdomen and they only perform one kind of surgery, but it is law in North Carolina. It helps to prevent "oops." ie you should have amputated the right leg not the left. They should have asked you about the surgery and then wrote "yes" on your abdomen.

Okay. Before surgery the nurse writes a "yes" on your stomach. What is it for? Are they doing a poll? Are they saying, "yes, there will be a baby in there"? LOL DH is still laughing over that one. Heather
