snowgirl: my DH did the same thing, lol. Started figuring out the cost of diapers, formula and way far off, college.

I carried my two to 36w4d (37 weeks is full term for twins). Their actual due date is July 13th (Monday). I always kept that date at the front of my mind. Those little milestones through pregnancy really helped. The end is when you want it to go fast, lol, and I know when my water broke, I was excited and nervous about delivery at the same time. They say after the first one, the second baby is easy. Well, I can't remember specifically, but the best part to me was only have labor pains one time (for the pregnancy) instead of two separate times, lol. Mine were born 9 minutes apart vaginally. I hope your two are head down for delivery also and you have an easy stress-free 9 months.
If you ever want to talk you can email me at dreamweaver0828 at aol dot com.

thanks everyone for the well wishes! We are still trying to wrap our heads around it all! lol we are happy and excited and freaked out, etc. My hubby was happy when he realized that we could all still fit in the mini van if we get car seats for the older two kids that are more narrow! lol He is stressing about the expenses to come..brought up that we won't all fit at our table. I laughed and told him it would be a long itme before these babies are needing a chair at the table and we can deal with that when it is time. But that is just my dh, very practical and very aware of how much things cost, etc. I told him last night that the only thing I am thinking about is doing all I can to help these babies grow and stay put as long as they can.. everything else we can figure out as it comes.
But I am a little thrown off that after I push one baby out, there will be one more to go! lol

I have always been told that identical twins were a fluke, or an accident sort of thing. But I am not an expert. I just know that we dont have any identical twins on either side of my family for numerous generations. None on my fathers side and the one set that is on my mother's side is so far back. We know this from doing geneology. If identical twins are in fact herditary, we have never seen it run in our family.

The only way they could tell my brothers were identical twins, 43 years ago, was because they shared the same placenta. And my Mom found out she was having twins the month before she had them. They never heard two heartbeats, and it was long before they would be having sonograms. My Mom called my Dad at work and said it was twins and he hung up on her. LOL

Heather - Monozygotic twins, or identical twins are not hereditary. You can easily google or search this on any related site. It is thought to be a issue in the splitting/division of cells or as Wikipedia states:

Division of the zygote into two embryos is not considered to be a hereditary trait, but rather an anomaly that occurs in birthing at a rate of about three in every 1000 deliveries worldwide,[14] regardless of race. The two embryos develop into fetuses sharing the same womb. When one egg is fertilized by one sperm cell, and then divides and separates, two identical cells will result.

It is neither the sperm or egg that decides but rather the cells themselves as they are splitting.

While it's true that dizygotic twins or better knows as fraternal twins are hereditary Wiki goes on to say this:

Studies show that there is a genetic basis for DZ twinning. However, it is only their mother that has any effect on the chances of having DZ twins; there is no known mechanism for a father to cause the release of more than one ovum. Dizygotic twinning ranges from six per thousand births in Japan (similar to the rate of monozygotic twins) to 14 and more per thousand in some African countries.[7]

Science supports that only the woman's side can ultimately affect twinning in MOST cases. The use of fertility meds, IUI/IVF, AMA of the mother and number of pregnancies can also increase the chances of both types of twinning, which explains the increase we've seen in multiples in the last few decades.

Wikipedia for twin reading..

I've never heard of any test to determine which parent determined twins. What would you test, the zygote or fetus? [Confused]

There is genetic testing to confirm whether the egg or sperm caused the embryo to to split? Interesting!

It is Identical Twins that run in his family. In that case the Sperm or the Egg can be the one that decides if it will split or not. A couple of them have done genetic testing to confirm this. In the case of Fraternal Twins it is the woman, but in the case of Identical Twins it can be either one.
