Heather, the twins may be on your dh side, but it's the women in that family that are responsible for the twins. If there were no eggs there for the men to fertilize they couldn't produce a singleton, muchless twins etc. That's why women take the fertility drugs that can sometimes produce multiples and not the men.

Congrat's snowgirloo7! What a terrific *double* blessing for your family.
My FIL is a fraternal twin, but my OB had told me the same thing Caroljean mentioned. Fraternal twins really needs to run on the mother's side to have a significant chance of recurring. Identical twins is not hereditary, so your age, number of pregnancies can increase any lucky ladies chance of seeing "identical" double.

Actually, its believed that twins occur more often than what we realize. Two eggs will fertilize but only one will successfully implant or make it to the point of being seen on an ultrasound. This is especially true since many women not trying to conceive or having u/s until 6-8 weeks and by that time one had "vanished". Several women have seen two sacs, but by the time the heartbeat is seen, only one has made it. But in your case, snowgirloo, you have seen two strong heartbeats so you are one of the lucky ones.
Also, to re-iterate what pkubes said, fraternal twins are only possible by the woman sides, because it only happens when two eggs are released and fertilized. Identical twins on the other hand are much less common and occur when the egg splits in two. There is a theory though that it could be the sperm that causes the split though, but no one really knows, because it is so uncommon. Identical twins are not hereditary.

My older brothers are the only identical twins in many many generations. Like pkubes said, it's up to the woman. She releases two eggs by accident for fraternal twins or the egg accidentally splits to make identical twins as in my brothers' case.
Twins are exciting! For the life of me I will never understand the bond between them, but it is absolutely amazing to watch even when they are almost 43 years old.

Twins can't run on the man's side...men determine the sex and women determine how many. You can thank the man for a boy or girl but you, the woman, are responsible for the twins/multiples. Releasing more than one egg causes multiple birth and men don't have eggs. Also, anyone can have twins. It can be just a fluke. Hope you do have twins. Good Luck.

In my husbands family the twins run on the males side. It has as far back as they can calculate and it skips every other generation. His mom is a twin, she did not have twins, so it falls to him, his brother, or their cousin. I am really hoping that it falls to my husband. LOL I guess I am just a glutten for punishment. Heather

Maybe I will get a double dose of girls? lol I really don't care what they are.. just want to keep them in as long as I can and have healthy little babies! I have to say, it is pretty exciting that there are two in there!
