Steph, they can do the nuchal measurements now with ultrasound, and you have to have blood work done around the same time, and then they look at both and decide wether or not there is a possibility of a problem, but I think they will still do an amnio if there are questions after those new tests.

I have read that they do not have to do an amnio anymore to test for things like Down Syndrome, that there are blood tests that they can do now. I hope that is actually the case, since I had my first two so young, I am definately having testing done... I think I'm overly paranoid about there being something wrong at my "advanced age" lol.....

I have a friend who is 44 and just delivered a healthy girl (her third child). I had my 3rd child (affectionatly dubbed..."baby oops")in 2005 at age 40 (a completely healthy 8 lb 10 oz boy). I had amnios with all three since I did not have my first child until a few months before I turned 35. The amnios were more scary than bad (I hate needles!). I also work with someone who has a friend who was 26 and had a baby with Down's Syndrome (no amnio as there was no reason or indication). Things can happen at any age! So, the point of my story is that if 2 old broads like me and my friend had perfectly healthy pregnancies and babies with an average egg age of 42...then there is much hope out there for others!..Keep the faith but don't drive yourself crazy with stress and pressure..You don't want to give your eggs performance anxiety!

I just turned 39 and delivered my TR baby almost 3 weeks ago; just 1 year after my surgery. We chose not to have an amnio or any special testing. Actually, my GYN didn't even consider 39 being advanced maternal age....because I had to bring up the subject; he never mentioned amnio. I think some physicians may be changing their age ranges. I wish you lots of luck!!

Hi VA40,

I was 39 when I got pregnant with my son, and 40 when I delivered (1/9/08). I did not have an amnio. They did the measurements ultrasound three times and seemed to think everything was fine. Happy to report I have a BEAUTIFUL, healthy happy 3 month old (today!)! (19 months to the day of my surgery!)

I had an amnio when I was 38. It was a simple procedure done in the dr's office. He inserted the needle and accidentally poked my daughter's leg......boy did she jump and my husband was terrified! I do have to admit that it hurt more when he pulled the needle out. It was a strange sucking sensation. I hear there might be different ways to test now, since that was back in 2000. I'm hoping, since now at 45, I'm 7w pg and will definately have to go through testing.

Take care,
Linda

VA40 I had an amnio with my 2nd DD, her father has a brother who is severly retarded and has downs syndrome. He has been in a full care home since he was 12 years old. He needs full time care, he cannot function at all for himself in anyway, cannot talk even. Cannot feed himself, use a toilet nothing. He can't even attempt it. There is no teaching him.
The amnio wasn't bad, everything went fine and she was normal. I was 27 at the time.
I wanted to be sure.
She was fine though. I didn't want to terminate, but I wanted to know what I was in for.... there is no worse a surprise than that. I wanted to be ready and have everything and all the support I would need and education in that case.

I have a girlfriend who had one that was not showing up normal, she terminated the pregnancy, and went on 5 years later at 39 to have a normal baby girl with her new husband. It's not all our eggs, it's the man's sperm too so you know. It takes 2.

VA40, I talked to my doctor just yesterday about all the available testing since I am of advanced maternal age. She asked me why I declined all testing, and I asked her what the testing would change. She said well, nothing if you plan not to terminate, and I said it isn't even an option.

Renee,

I was told the exact same thing by an RE. I was PG a month and a half after my TR. My baby is now 6 months old. Guess who got a birth announcement?

Renee, I recently went through an IVF cycle. I was worried that my eggs were too old, even though all my tests came out great. I read somewhere that eggs may have a grayish appearance in this case. I asked my RE, and he said they judge by how well the embryos grow. I had three fertilized, and they were slow growers. All three were transferred, and I am now 9 weeks with a singleton. So, I got no real answers, but I can only assume they just don't know too much about how to tell if they are too old.

A physiological anomaly can be other reasons besides old eggs I would think. At what stage did you miscarry? What meds were you on? There are many women who have to go through more than one round of IVF to carry to term, and lots of them are younger. I wish you much luck and hope you find some answers. The whole process of becoming pregnant and waiting for the baby to arrive is full of worries isn't it?

Hello ladies, you all aren't going to believe what I'm about to tell u, but it's true. The lady from my job that works in the business office at my company has a aunt who 73 years old and pregnant, has alhelmizer's and this is 1st baby. She's 1 month pregnant and her boyfriend is 63 years old. They are going to put it on the news and in the newspaper once they find out from the doctor that everything is fine.I was just as shock as you ladies are and still in shock.Unbelieveable,I just can't imagine 73 years old.I thought after a certain period of time your womb starts to drop. Her niece told us Saturday. If anyone is interested in reading the article, when it's published,I would be glad to send u a copy of it,if the pregnancy progresses fine.Katrina e-mail Ktrnjf@aol.com
