Hi everyone,

I am a daily lurker on the over 40 thread, but have only posted on the After TR board. I turned 40 back in October.

DH and I are TTC TR baby#2. I was 34 when I had my TR and came out with lengths of 4.0 and 4.5. After one year of TTC I had an hsg that showed the 4.0 right side was blocked. I sent the films to Dr. B and he confirmed. I got a BFP 3 months later and had my TR son on 4/9/04.

I used an IUD for 18 months afterwards. Then after having it taken out I got a BFP 4 months later. My numbers never doubled and I m/c a week later. Then nothing for 20 months until this past March when I had an e/p. I m/c on my own again, but the pain just wouldn't 100% go away. So 8 weeks after m/c I had a lap done and my right tube was removed. Oh yes, it was my right tube - the one that was supposedly blocked. My OB also did hydrotubation during the lap and my left tube spilled perfectly. Both ovaries looked great and I had a follie about to pop.

Had the CD3 tests done and all that looked fantastic.

I was 36.5 when I had my TR son, and now I am 40 and still TTC TR baby#2. I know I am VERY, VERY blessed to have one TR baby. And if I am never able to have another, then that is okay. But, I am going to keep trying for a while.

I was wondering, how many in our over 40 crowd have become pregnant post-TR?

Michele, and other newcomers - welcome!

As for some testing that might be good before TR - first things first - if your partner/husband does not have any children of his own, have him get a Sperm Analysis done. Its relatively inexpensive and easy to do. While many men quake at the thought - 1/2 of all fertility problems are male factor.

CD 3 FSH is a good test for the ladies - keep in mind that its just an indicator - a low FSH number means you have plenty of eggs left (though they are as old as we are)a higher number means that your body is having to work harder to get a follicle growing, but it does NOT mean you wont get pg. As long as you are still ovulating, you can get pg.
If you have a few months before your scheduled surgery - start following ovulation (yes you ovulate even if your tubes are tied) to make sure that you ARE ovulating - simply done, just buy Ovulation Predictor Kits and follow directions. If you can, another good test is to get a progesterone test done 7 days PAST ovulation (or positive OPK) to check progesterone levels, as levels too low could cause the lining of the uterus to not convert for implantation, or cause miscarriage if the lining is not sustained (quite common in over 40 ladies and easily corrected with supplements).

Following ovulation will also give you an idea ahead of time to know when you can expect ovulation, so you know when to have sex to optimize your chances.

Its nice to see so much hope and enthusiasm on this thread again. I truly wish you each the best, and hope to see good news from everyone soon!

Welcome Princess! I am 41 and started looking into TR about 10 years ago. I researched this quite a bit and you have come to the right place. CH has the most success stories that I have seen. Did I read correctly, are you in PA? IF so where? I live in PA too!

Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone. It was the best birthday yet.

Hello Princess,
Glad to see you made it over to this thread! [Smile]

I am also 41 years old. My husband and I have been married for 17 years (wow, that went fast) and have three little princesses of our own, ages 11, 9 and 5.

I did some research about options for TR here in FL and talked to my gyno about it. He was very, very adament that IF I wanted TR, then I should go to a place that ONLY DOES TR !!! He used the example that if he had cancer, he would go to a cancer specialist -- someone that only treated cancer. He felt so strongly about CH, that he must have gone back to the subject and repeated himself at least 6 times during the visit. If you want TR, go to the place where they ONLY DO TR!!

Also, my gyno asked if Dr.B made his stats available to me. I told him that they were available on the website! He then told me that with TR, there was an increased chance of EP and I explained that Dr.B had a pregnancy protocol on his website. My gyno was grinning ear to ear. My gyno then asked if the surgery was "micro-surgery" and what type of techniques were used. I explained that it was micro-surgery and Dr.B's website explained what they did to minimize trauma and pain to the area. My gyno asked hard questions and Dr.B's website had all the right answers.

Also, I think it is important to talk to women who have already had TR done. When I hear them talk about their positive experiences, I am reassured that I have selected the right place!

I would just recommend that you continue to do research and ask questions until YOU are comfortable. Also, the nurses are available to answer specific questions that you might have.

I am not sure about other testing that might be beneficial beyond the FSH on CD3.

Does anyone know of another test that might be useful prior to TR?

Good Luck to you!

Hi Princess. I'm 41 as well and just had my TR 4/14/08. I have four boys (20,18,15,12) and am hoping to have one with my new hubby (28). Besides the success rates and percentages, check out the New Pregnancies forum page. When they post a new preg. they also post her age and tube lengths. I think there is a 40 something or close to just about every week, so they must be doing something right! Dr B and his team really made me feel welcome and comfortable. They are a great group of people that treat you like an individual, not a statistic. Be sure to have the pre-testing done they suggest and talk to your local doctor as well. Good Luck and keep in touch.

Hi Jan! I hope this tiredness of yours is a good sign! [Smile]

I'm doing OK - just staying busy - too busy to freak out, obsess, or worry (hopefully). I order the Lupron in a few days, and the rollercoaster begins again. Less than 8 wks before we leave for the clinic. I wont be able to check in much this week - I have a class today, then am teaching for the next two days. Friday have to take the dogs to Belgium to see their American vet (yes, a 2 hour drive each way to get booster shots - but they LIKE that vet!) Saturday morning is another fund raiser and then Saturday afternoon DD has her sports award day - she's getting her letter in Soccer [Smile] Monday is another fund raiser, maybe by Tuesday I will have a few minutes to sit down again [Smile]

Welcome to all the new ladies - I truly hope your journeys are short and sweet.

Princess, welcome! I researched TR docs for 2 yrs and always felt most comfortable with CH and Dr Berger. There were other clinics that were more expensive, and some that were cheaper, but none had his experience or success rates. (Make sure as you research that the docs you talk to are giving you the TR success rates - NOT total clinic success rates; many clinics do other fertility treatments as well and will lump all stats together - but the success of your TR will have nothing to do with their IUI or IVF success rates!) I had my TR 9/29/04 at age 37 - and while we havent been successful in getting pg (not a single pg yet) I do not regret the TR. Keep in mind that it gives you the CHANCE to conceive!

Have a great day ladies!!

Hi ladies, I'm new to this. I had my TL in 96. I am 41 and found a new love in my life that would love to have a baby (me to of course). I have three girls ages 12,17 and 20(with a 2 month old grandson) My question is the age factor. Any info that you ladies might have for my age group would be GREAT! How many of you researched other Doctor's before deciding on Chapel Hill? I'm from PA

Hi everyone, newbie here! I am scheduled for 8/1 and I am very excited. My only bit of nervousness comes from being 40 so this board is a blessing. I am turning 41 tomorrow. It is so nice to see some others in their 40's on here. My DH and I have been married for 12 years and he has been the world's best Dad to my 2 little angels (13 and 15)since they were toddlers but has no biological kids of his own. I feel really good and positive about this. Seeing the 40+ pregnancies on here is awesome. Thanks for listening.

Hi Ladies,
At 13w4d, I am still suffering the MS. Not quite as bad as it used to be, but it's comes just to REMIND me! Although it can be miserable, it keeps me hoping that the PG is progressing normally. My dr told me years ago when I had my first that they believed the sicker you are the healthier the PG. [Roll Eyes]

I am still taking the PGN......dr said I could stop at 13w, but I am too terrified to stop. My next appt is on May 29 and I will 'discuss' it again with him!

Someone at work today asked if I knew what I was having and I told her that I am only 13w and they can't tell that early. She was stunned because she thought I was about 7months! [Wink] I have a tendency to 'blow up' quickly. I gained 25# in the first 5/6w and luckily haven't gained anything since.

I also 'suffered' my [Eek!] 46 birthday [Eek!] on May 21. I have my co-workers believing I turned 40 and they couldn't believe that I didn't go out and celebrate the big 4-0! [Big Grin]

Also [baby] is moving. I've been feeling him/her for about a week. So HOPEFULLY.....(I still have my fingers crossed) everything is OK. I will push the dr for further 'investigations' with tests next week when we talk. He doesn't want to proceed with anything until 20/21w, which I feel is way too late.

Hope everyone has a nice loooong weekend! As usual in Chicago, they are calling for rain on Memorial Day [Roll Eyes] .

Take care
[Kiss]
Linda
