I BF all my babies and my adoped son, Madelynn has been my biggest challenge with the Thrush and problems latching on bcause I was in so much pain I would try to get it in her mouth before I would start to cry it was awefull. The doctors were not much help when they told me some women just cant BF adn I was one of those women...I wanted to punch his lights out, How many other women did he say that to and they stoped because of his lack of BF information....I had already BF 4 babies, of course I could do it I just needed to get rid of the Thrush that he said I DIDN T have...Dumb A** finaly my Midwife hooked me up with some nystaten and gentin vilot and it was gong in about 5 days.Madelynn looked like a big purple Barnie because of the medicine but it was cute. Anyway after the thrush was gone Madelynn learned to latch better in a matter of days and is still Bfing....Mostly at night becasue i am working now but hey I gave her nothing but breastmilk for the first 4 months,
Michelle- "newborn should BF 10 to 12 times in a 24 hour period" I just about fell off my chair when I read that- For what ever its worth I am going to try it and see how it goes - this is my fifth baby and I never BF any of the others- I kind of feel like a loser mom now but atthe time it was the best choice for me... So make sure you stick around because I will be havig LOTS of ?s for ya~!~~ Thank You for all your advice and willingness to help me!!!!
April- So the pump was worth it huh??? I am going to look more into them and still need to read that book! I can't wait to see the pictures of Autumn- When will they look at surgery for your hernia?
Ok my food is done I need to go eat and I'll be back for more posting and an update from todays' appointment--

Thanks Michelle.....I appreciate your comments. All of my children have been different in their BF habits and all represent the full spectrum. My 2nd DS was a pro...he could empty a breast in 5 minutes, raise his head to burp and switch to the other breast for a second 5 minutes...completely empty and done with both breasts in less than 10 minutes; while my 3rd DS would linger for 30-40 minutes "savoring" his meals. Nolan, on the other hand; acts as though he's starving and "gulps" at the breast while he's getting into a rhythm....and he's not the best at latching on because he's in too big of a hurry to just get it in his mouth! With my first DS and DD, I thought I was learning more and had BF down to a science by my second DS; but they all are truly different and come with their own opinions of how things should go BUT...it has been the most rewarding experience I have ever had and I miss my children at the breast so much when they wean; I applaud every women who is able to experience this.
I noticed that a few of you were BF and I wanted to say that I am so happy for you! I BF my three daughters and always found it to be very rewarding... for them, for me and for our whole family. I just wanted to let you know that if you ever have any BF questions, you can always ask me. I have over 8 years of personal BF experience and lead BF groups with new moms like yourselves.
Becki, you were asking how often a baby should BF. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that a newborn should BF 10 to 12 times in a 24 hour period. If a baby sleeps a little longer at night (maybe 3-4 hours ) then s/he will probably nurse a bit more during the day. As the child grows, the length of time between sessions gradually increases. How long is a session? That really depends on the baby. Some can finish a breast in 15 - 20 minutes and some like "to graze" for longer. This is all normal. It is important to finish the first breast first (make sure that it is empty) before offering the second breast. Generally if you offer the right breast first in one session, you will offer the left breast first in the next session.
The thing that is most important about breastfeeding is the latch -- positioning the baby on the breast well. There are La Leche League leaders in most communities and they are happy to help you with your latch. This is a volunteer organization and there is never any charge to you!
tshort, you mentioned that Nolan liked to act like he was BF, and I wanted to mention that this is very healthy for him. Babies do get comfort from close body contact with mom and from suckling. Also, the additional suckling will help keep up your milk supply!
Best wishes to you for lots of healthy milk! ~Michelle
Well sorry haven't been on here much. I'm still healing for c-section. Plus with Autumn bf and the pump I haven't got much time for myself.
I pump at least two time time a day. Bf Autumn 2-3 hours sometimes it lasted for about 10mins and other time it can lasted for 1 hour.
Autumn went to the doctor appiontment. I was worry she wasn't gain weight because didin't look like she was. I was so wrong she is now 7pds and 7 oz. When we left the hospital she was 5 pds and 11 0z. She doing so good don't want to see her for a month. We have picture first visit I will put them up later today. My DH can't stop taking pictures. Becki~ glad you made it back safe and sound; hope you all had a great time. My back is better but not as good as I would like it. I think maybe it's something I will discuss with my doctor at my six weeks checkup; maybe related to pregnancy and other "female" issues....considering this was my 5th vaginal delivery; I'm no spring chicken.....and maybe I should start acting like it!
Nolan is doing great and growing like crazy! He is still nursing every 3-4 hours; but sometimes he just likes to "act" like he's nursing to get to sleep. I don't mind though, I think it's wonderful that he needs ME so much....no one else can take my place right now! Selfish, huh? I don't care....I may never get this chance again; so I'll be greedy right now.
OK- April had Autumn on FRIDAY The 18th- Athena had Garrett on SATURDAY the 19th-- so they are one day apart!! I lost my Saturday with all the soccer games and posted it wrong (SORRY!) I realized it after I shut down the computer but was too tired to turn it back on...
